Job Summary

Compensation and benefit generalist who provides analytical and administrative support in the design and administration of employee compensation, incentive, and/or benefit plans. Programs may include (but are not limited to) job evaluation, performance management, salary increase and administration, compensation and benefit surveys, long- and short-term incentive plans, HRIS or system input and management, and benefit plans.

Requires knowledge and experience in the compensation and/or benefit discipline sufficient to resolve a range of relatively straight-forward problems, and analyze possible solutions using standard procedures, or recommend deviations from such procedures, as appropriate. Assignments are received in the form of results expected (within operating policies and procedures); incumbent has the discretion to select from alternative approaches, and decisions may involve changes to “normal” work processes. Partners with senior-level compensation, benefit, and labor relations professionals to ensure the accurate and appropriate delivery of applicable compensation and benefit program components. Span of control: 0; this is an individual contributor job.

Key Accountabilities

  • Participate in the monitoring of competitive trends in compensation and/or benefit programs, including survey participation (e.g. the provision of guidance to of senior-level compensation, benefit or labor/employee relations personnel with regard to survey job matches and market pricing, and performing requisite survey data entry or review).

  • Conduct research and market analysis of compensation and/or benefit services.

  • Use metrics to provide on-going analytical support and evaluate the effectiveness of compensation and benefit programs, e.g. cost/benefit analysis, efficacy metrics, etc.

  • Assist in the communication and interpretation of compensation and/or benefit plans (e.g.: summary plan description-type material) for HR staff and supervisory or management personnel.

  • May participate in the Corporation’s job evaluation/analysis program, per the coordination of activities by senior-level compensation staff.

  • May manage Compensation’s job catalogue process, auditing compensation changes in the pay system entered by either line management or Compensation; entering data entry necessary to implement compensation and/or benefit adjustments, and all attendant job catalogue activities. Provides the subject matter expertise to document and train others within Compensation on the job catalogue process.

  • Participates in continuous improvement efforts within the compensation and/or benefit function; including the establishment of quality/quantity standards and metrics; documenting and sharing knowledge among applicable staff in a systematic fashion


  • Bachelor’s degree in business or public administration, or an HR management related discipline, and the knowledge /capabilities typically acquired through 3-plus years of experience in employee compensation, benefits or HRIS design/administration, or HR generalist responsibilities that entail compensation/benefit administration.

Preferred: proficiency in Microsoft Office spreadsheet, database, word-processing, or equivalent applications; working knowledge of appropriate HR regulation, e.g.: ERISA, COBRA, HIPPA, FMLA, etc.

  • Proficient verbal, written and presentation skills; communicates clearly, with credibility and confidence.

  • Analytical and problem-solving skills consistent with the ability to identify key issues from a broad range of alternatives, and recommend optimal solutions for various situations.

  • Flexibility and the ability to work with shifting priorities; embrace new/evolving responsibilities.
