Job Summary

Highest professional level/expert IT Network Engineering position. The Principal IT Network Engineer works as a team member to provide Level 2 and Level 3 support, makes recommendations, leads projects, and directs the development and/or research of advanced network technologies in Data Center, LAN/WAN and wireless routing/switching disciplines. The Principal IT Network Engineer performs complex tasks related to area of technical responsibility, works on multiple assignments and projects, and leads/facilitates meetings and group discussions, presentations, and technical training classes. The Principal IT Network Engineer is self-managed, mentors and coaches less experienced IT Network Engineers and ITS personnel, and provides leadership and technical direction on all aspects of network engineering.

Incumbent is expected to establish and secure approval of goals and policies for his/her own area of responsibility, consistent with Corporate goals and objectives. Actions are reviewed in terms of goals accomplished. Span of control: 0; this is an individual contributor job

Key Accountabilities

May vary, depending on the discipline or organization

-May lead projects and/or project teams (including assigning work, reviewing progress and evaluating results), mentor, provide guidance and technical direction to less experienced engineering and technical staff, including the provision of input in performance evaluations, but is not responsible for supervising anyone.

-Plans, schedules, and manages all operational day-to-day engineering support work activities for network technologies/infrastructures; manages trouble ticket/problem resolution and issue escalation.

-Leads projects to ensure on-time and in-budget implementation to support the achievement of business unit strategic plans.

-Makes recommendations in area of network infrastructure and the introduction of technology to the IT organization; participates in evaluating enabling technologies; designs and manages network architectures; leads research of advanced technologies.

-Consults on planning and issues in network design and direction; provides configurations for the network; consults with application teams on proper design and use of technologies and tools; consults on network architecture design and direction.

-Actively seeks continuous improvement opportunities and leads continuous improvement initiatives of internal processes, procedures, and standards; may consult on efforts to improve the quality of organizational processes, policies, and standards.

-Consults on operational and planning issues related to network technologies; works closely with outside vendors in planning projects, to evaluate vendor's software, and to resolve issues

-Keeps abreast of technology trends and the stated direction of the enterprise in order to select technology platforms that are appropriate and cost beneficial; has an established professional presence in the industry and maintains business relationships with key technical dependent industries and organizations to support the application of technology to specific business areas.

-Works as a proactive team player in dynamic environments and acts as project lead on multiple projects. Supports multiple internal and external clients.

-Leads and facilitates meetings and group discussions; develops and conducts formal and informal presentations and technical training classes.

-Creates and maintains project work plans and budgets; schedules and manages work activities and projects to achieve on time and in budget implementation of best-in-class solutions that meet organization and corporate goals.

-Provides direction and leadership on all aspects of network engineering and internal IT processes; is self-managed and forward thinking and promotes team quality. Supports/ consults on team members' performance management; coaches team members on interacting with others outside of their work group.

Qualifications

-Bachelor’s degree in an applicable information technology discipline and the knowledge & capabilities typically acquired through 5-plus years of business unit-related experience inclusive of system administration including installing, configuring, and troubleshooting for network technologies/infrastructures in the Data Center, LAN/WAN and wireless routing/switching disciplines.

-Preferred: Cisco Routers, Switches, L3 Switches (including Nexus 7000/5000/2000, ISRs, Catalyst based hardware)/WLAN Technologies: Cisco Wireless LAN Controllers, Autonomous AP’s, Lightweight AP’s, Standards 802.11 a/b/g/n/LAN Technologies: Ethernet/ Fast Ethernet/ Gigabit Ethernet networks, VLANS, VTP, STP, PVST, RSTP, 802.1W, DHCP/WAN Technologies: SONET, DWDM, MPLS/PIP, Switched Ethernets, Leased circuits, ISDN, T1/T3, OC3, OC48, ATM/Routing Protocols: EIGRP, BGP & OSPF/Network Protocols/Services/Features: ACL, NAT/PAT, Route maps, IPsec VPNs/ GRE Tunnels, RADIUS, TACACS , TCP/IP, UDP, GBLP, VRRP, HSRP, QoS, CDP, DNS, ICMP, ARP/Network Management/Troubleshooting Tools: Cisco Prime Infrastructure, Wireshark, Cisco ACS, NetMRI, NetScout, NNM, Infoblox IPAM

-May require initial and/or periodic drug or fitness for duty testing; the physical ability to work in a power plant environment (e.g. climb stairs, work in hot, confined environments); and flexibility to perform on-call responsibilities to provide off-hours support as scheduled.

-Written and verbal communication & advocacy skills consistent with the ability to present results of projects & research to all levels of the business unit and engage in persuasive written & verbal interaction.

-Consulting and influencing skills consistent with the ability to influence and build relationships to foster a positive work environment and elicit support for acceptance of new technology across the enterprise

Business & management acumen extending beyond the incumbent’s specific job, enabling to proffer valuable insights, recommendations or challenges to policies, procedures & practices extending beyond the immediate scope of his job (this level of insight or expertise is typically not attained without several years of experience, regardless of the level of educational attainment).

-Experience in managing projects, and scheduling and managing the work activities of others.

-Demonstrated broad understanding of IT industry, e.g. emerging technologies, industry standards, support services, architectures, systems design, and systems integration and an in-depth knowledge of operational issues in at least one area of engineering support.

-Well-developed organization and planning skills (typically acquired through at least 5 years of experience).

-Ability to apply project planning & implementation and/or continuous improvement principles (typically acquired through several years of experience in these areas) to affect tangible, positive outcomes.

-Motivates through ‘leading by example,’ coaching/mentoring and providing ongoing constructive feedback to subordinate staff; competent in systematically eliciting the best efforts & results from subordinate staff.
