Job Summary:

Applies diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices in area of assignments. Makes decisions on engineering problems and methods and represents the department to resolve important questions. Requires the use of advanced techniques and the modification and extension of theories, precepts, and practices of own field and related sciences or disciplines, including practical field experience. Consults Supervisor concerning unusual problems and developments. May guide or coordinate the work of associate or staff engineers.

Key Accountabilities:

• Apply company standards and practices to all design work

• Review and assess new technology, materials and equipment

• Frame engineering/operational problems and propose solutions

• Monitor and coordinate engineering related activities as related to field

construction projects

• Monitor system performance and prepare long and short-term facility plans

including costs

• Must be able to make sound engineering decisions under limited time


• Prepare complex written procedures to facilitate construction, maintenance,

and operation of gas transmission systems as related to pipeline integrity

assessments and remediation of defects

• Provide complex analysis, design, specification and cost estimates for gas

transmission systems

• Provide technical support to field as needed

• Prepare and present technical reports to management

• Develop budgets and monitor costs for projects, including high visibility


• Oversee contractors engaged in the review of transmission pipeline records to

identify record gaps

• Develop multi-year plans to close record gaps consistent with the

requirements of the Michigan Gas Safety Standards, and coordinate such

plans with regular system construction activities to minimize system outage

• Develop scope of work for implementation of construction activities to close

record gaps.

• Organize pipeline records in an electronic format to facilitate linkage of records

to pipeline segments in ESRI.

• Participate in Continuous Improvement (CI) training and apply CI tools and

methodologies to improve output of job assignments and work processes


• Bachelor's degree in Engineering. Preference will be given to engineers with

experience in pipeline design and integrity management

• Minimum of five years of job-related experience

• Professional Engineer registration is desired

• Proficiency in computer applications applicable to specific work field/discipline

including EXCEL, WORD, VISIO and ACCESS database

• Must have a valid driver’s license, provide a suitable automobile for use on

Company business, and meet Company driving standards

• Ability to interpret blueprints/drawings/schematics and other design documents

• Communicate effectively both orally and in writing with people at all levels both

within and outside the company.

• Effective in self-management of time with a demonstrated personal

commitment to work

• Advanced knowledge of design, installation, commissioning and records

requirements for gas pipeline system, consistent with Michigan Gas Safety


• Proficient in planning and execution of pipeline integrity management tasks

including ILI and DA, pipeline remediation, threat identification, risk

assessment and records management

• Knowledge of industry codes and standards including Michigan Gas Safety

Standards, ASME Piping Codes, National Electric Code and DTE Gas
