ENVIRONMENTAL SPECIALIST

Location: River Rouge, Michigan

_ GENERAL SUMMARY_

The position is responsible for researching environmental regulations and maintaining and managing facility environmental information. Work involves performing difficult services requiring a moderate level of independent judgement, initiative and discretion. Work is performed under moderate supervision, with work results reviewed through the achievement of set goals and adherence to policies and procedures.

_ PRINICIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES_

  • Gathers data from multiple sources for written interpretation in the areas of potential and existing regulations

  • Focuses research on those aspects applicable for development projects as well as those with the potential to affect existing facilities; may include: Pollution Control Technologies, Clear Skies/Multipollutant Standard Development, Mercury Standard Development, Carbon Sequestration, Section 316b of the Clean Water Act, Industrial Wastewater Pretreatment Standards, and MACT Standard Development for Electric Utilities

  • Maintains and manages environmental information by compiling facility information

  • Works with operations and asset management to acquire comprehensive environmental files for all facilities

  • Identifies areas where environmental compliance activities should be focused (i.e., training, plan and procedure development)

  • Helps identify potential environmental activities that will enable facilities to “go above and beyond” compliance

  • Incorporates compliance deadlines and similar information into a database (ideally for universal access and tracking) to assist with ensuring the company and all its subsidiaries are in compliance with all federal, state, and local environmental regulations

  • Performs all other related duties as assigned

_ KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES_

A Bachelors degree (or equivalent) from an accredited college or university in an environmental related science field, or equivalent, with zero to two years related work experience, to provide for the following:

  • Proficiency in internet research

  • Ability to analyze and comprehend processes and related work flows and develop an organizational structure to support process documentation retention

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite database management

  • Ability to efficiently handle competing priorities and tasks, remain organized and meet deadlines

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, coworkers, management and the general public
