Operations & Maintenance Technician II – Water Plant
Location: Bakersfield, California*
This primary responsibility is to provide high quality water to the boiler and cooling tower. This individual is directly responsible for testing, analyzing and controlling the various parameters in the Water Treatment Plant to ensure optimum performance, as well as, being responsible for all equipment. Work is performed under direct supervision with results reviewed through the achievement of set goals and adherence to policies and procedures. This position reports directly to the O&M Manager, but will also take daily direction from the on-shift O&M Tech IV (Control Operator).
Duties and Responsibilties*
Responsible for the on-shift operation of the Power Plant water treatment facility in accordance with OSHA standards and written Company Policy.
Continuously monitors water plant systems and equipment, making adjustments as necessary to ensure safe efficient operation and produce water that is within established quality standards. Recognizes abnormal conditions and takes proper corrective actions.
Ensure safe transfer of chemicals within the Water Plant in accordance with Company policy and procedures. When required, oversees delivery and unloading of bulk caustic soda and sulfuric acid tanker trucks into plant storage tanks.
Collects, tabulates and evaluates equipment operating data to identify potential problems. Resolves problems if possible. Reports evaluations, actions and/or recommendations to the Control Operator.
Performs required water chemistry tests at various points throughout the water plant. Determines the proper application and dosage of chemicals to maintain water chemistry within established limits.
Adjusts feed rates on various chemical feed metering pumps to maintain chemical parameters of the water treatment process.
Monitors chemical and consumable inventories to ensure an adequate supply is maintained at all times.
Properly document work requests or material requisitions in the Main Saver Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
Maintain electronic logs (OpraLog) and reports as required to inform others of current operating parameters or condition of equipment and systems.
Starts up, operates and shuts down Reverse Osmosis and Demineralization units as required to meet plant needs. Performs chemical regenerations of the Demineralizer per the standard procedure as needed.
Completes Planned Maintenance checks as assigned. Documents results in Main Saver (CMMS) and the electronic log (OpraLog) and makes recommendations to the O&M Manager to improve the PM System.
Performs routine maintenance to keep piping and equipment in good mechanical condition. This includes chipping of rust, application of rust preventative or convertor and application of proper paint coatings.
Successfully complete training objectives as assigned.
Assist with development of training materials and training of other operators.
This individual is responsible for the correct line-up, monitoring and weekly testing of the plant fire pumps which are critical to providing fire protection when needed.
Assist Power Plant Operator as required.
A high school diploma or GED is required and 2 years of water plant or other process control systems experience. Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license.
Ability to read and write effectively in English and do basic mathematics.
Must have the general ability to read and understand piping drawings, logic flow charts and process diagrams.
Must have beginning knowledge of chemistry, electricity / electronics, thermodynamics, pneumatic and mechanical systems.
Demonstrates working understanding of engineering principles associated with water clarification, water filtration, reverse osmosis and water demineralization.
Must possess the knowledge and ability to use computers and related technology efficiently.
Knowledge of plant safety, policies and procedures, especially in areas such as chemical handling, high-energy systems, confined spaces, incipient fire suppression, first aid, rotating machinery, and heavy equipment.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, coworkers, management and the general public.
Ability to work scheduled and unscheduled overtime and respond to call-ins when contacted.
