OPERATING ENGINEER - DTE ENERGY SERVICES

Location: Chicago, Illinois

_ GENERAL SUMMARY_

This position is responsible for operating, monitoring and performing routine maintenance on all equipment located within the Cogeneration and Steam Plant located at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT). Work is performed under direct supervision of a Plant Manager or Lead Engineer and performance is reviewed against an established set of goals and Company policies and procedures.

All equipment is owned by the Customer (IIT). DTE Energy Services operates and maintains the equipment on behalf of IIT.

Plant equipment includes include (2) Johnston Fire-Tube Boilers and (1) Keeler Water-Tube Boiler (20,000 LB/HR each) and (2) 3.5 MW, 68,000 LB/HR Cogeneration Units (Rolls Royce Turbine with Nebraska HRSG). Also included are economizers, deaerators, water treatment systems (softeners, dealkalizers and chemical addition equipment), pumps, filters, instrumentation, controls and 120/480-volt electrical systems.

Utility systems and powerhouse infrastructure experience (Boilers, HRSG’s, Gas Turbines and associated auxiliary equipment) is required. Work involves performing some difficult and complex functions requiring a high level of independent judgment, initiative and discretion. Work shifts rotate and the Operating Engineer frequently works alone.

_ PRINICIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES_

  • Ensure that the Customer’s (IIT) assets are operated in a safe, efficient and environmentally-responsible manner while satisfying IIT’s utility and energy requirements

  • Responsible for starting and stopping equipment and adjusting set points in response to changing weather and load conditions

  • Respond appropriately to abnormal operating conditions to ensure continuous supply of utilities and to prevent damage to equipment

  • Perform water chemistry testing and respond appropriately to any out of spec conditions

  • Monitor chemical levels and adjust injection rates as required

  • Observe and record plant operating parameters multiple times per shift using hand-held tablet

  • Enter operating data into various databases

  • Use operating data to identify and close plant performance gaps, including boiler efficiencies

  • Make entries into operator’s electronic log book

  • Communicate shift activities with relief person during shift changes

  • Receive vendor deliveries

  • Assist vendors, contractors and visitors as needed

  • Assist other employees as needed

  • Perform basic troubleshooting of equipment as required

  • Perform routine, planned, and emergency maintenance on all facility equipment as directed

  • Use computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) to generate work order assignments and inspections and update CMMS to document completed activities as directed

  • Perform cleaning and housekeeping of facility

  • Abide by all safety protocols, participate in instructor-led safety training and complete monthly web-based safety training as required and assigned

  • Actively engage in plant Safety Committee meetings and activities

  • Recognize, document, communicate and correct hazards, unsafe acts and unsafe conditions

  • Operate scissor lift

  • Maintain accurate time sheets in accordance with company standards

  • Perform other duties as assigned

_ KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES_

  • A high school diploma or GED, a City of Chicago Stationary Engineer’s License and at least 2 years of experience (prefer 5 years) in plant operations and maintenance.

  • Must have direct experience operating and maintaining steam boilers and auxiliary systems

  • Operational knowledge of gas turbines desired

  • Must understand the importance of ensuring high availability, reliability and efficiency

  • Working knowledge of powerhouse equipment and systems, including but not limited to: boilers, gas turbines, heat exchangers, electrical distribution (up to 480 volts), transformers, motors, pumps, piping/valves, instrumentation, controls and programmable logic controllers (PLC)

  • Basic water chemistry experience desired

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, coworkers, Customer, vendors and contractors

  • Experience in Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.) and email applications desired

  • Ability to effectively communicate (written and verbal)

  • CMMS experience desired

  • Capable of working alone or as part of a team without a significant level of supervision

_ WORKING CONDITIONS_

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions, including wet and/or humid conditions, and extreme heat. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and vibration. The employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and/or machinery. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
